To begin with, Picasso’s Blue Period was between years 1900 and 1904. These paintings Picasso had made were monochromatic with shades of blue and blue-green. At the time, Picasso had trouble selling them but now they’re well known. His Blue Period art pieces seem to reflect his experience of relative poverty and instability, the old and frail, the blind, etc. The artist was influenced by a journey through Spain and by the suicide of his friend. Picasso’s friend was named Carlos.

He took his life at a Café in Paris, France by shooting himself in the right temple. He died on February 17, 1901. Picasso had mentioned, “I started to paint in blue when I learned of Casagemas’s death” The fall of 1901 is when Picasso had started the emerge the dramatic event into his paintings of portraits. (Pablo Picasso Org, 2009).
Out of all his artworks. I had chose Celestina and Portrait of Suzanne Bloch. I had chose these portraits Picasso did because they were similar to the way I wanted to do my self-portrait. I chose Portrait of Suzanne Bloch because I wanted to try out shading technique within the her shirt. I also wanted to incorporate the the blue highlight within her hair into mine. I want to do that because of the photo I'm using for my self-portrait, sunlight is being glared on my hair, and I wanted to use those blue high lights to show that sunlight effect. In the other hand, I chose Celestina for my inspiration as well because I wanted to contribute that dark blue background into my self-portrait, so my figure pops when I used lighter colors for my skin tone and such. I also decided to go with that blue period art work because I liked how the skin on that portrait seemed normal yet had like a hint of blue into it, which makes it go well with the rest of the painting.
Lastly, as I've mentioned before Picasso had started painting with different shades of blue and blue-green because of the death of his friend, he was devastated because he wasn't there when it happened, he somewhere else (Pablo Picasso Org, 2009). Anyways, I liked how Picasso put his emotions toward his works, so I wanted to do that as well. Lately, I've been having a rough time when it comes to school, keeping up and making sure my grades are acceptable, personal issues and so on, it was a tough year. Therefore, I wanted to do what Picasso did and emerge my emotions into my self-portrait, which is why I used a blue color scheme. Also, I've been using an emotion theme lately so it goes well with that.

Sketches
I was inspired by a shirt I had gotten at Mexican Fiesta, that had red flowers on it. I wanted to incorporate these flowers into my piece but with shades of blue but I was afraid it would take away that sad feeling I was trying to portray within my piece.

This is my second sketch, I wanted to add the background based of Van Gogh but instead of doing many colors and short brush strokes, I was planning on making the lines plain white so my figure can be more focused on. Although that was my plan, I didn't do it because I wanted to keep that dull blue scheme Picasso had done in his work.

This sketch was similar to the second sketch I had done but with a different background. I had done raindrops for the background element but I honestly don't think I'm going to go through with it. I'll probably do something similar to rain drops falling.
